Essaouira is one of Morocco's most unique coastal cities — a UNESCO-listed blue-and-white medina, world-class surf, and a relaxed vibe unlike anywhere else.
Essaouira Travel Guide: Morocco Atlantic Gem
Essaouira is unlike any other Moroccan city. Where Marrakech overwhelms with colour and noise, Essaouira seduces with salty Atlantic breezes, crumbling sea walls, and a laid-back rhythm that has attracted artists, musicians, and wanderers for decades. Jimi Hendrix visited in the 1960s, Orson Welles filmed Othello here, and the city still carries that creative, bohemian spirit. It is only three hours from Marrakech by car — an easy and deeply rewarding day trip or overnight escape.
The Medina and Ramparts
Essaouira medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and unlike the souks of Fes or Marrakech, it is relaxed and easy to navigate. The main street, Avenue de l'Istiqlal, leads from the medina gate to the harbour. Side streets are lined with blue-and-white painted workshops, art galleries, and small restaurants. The city is famous for its woodworking tradition — thuya wood, found only in this region, is carved into intricate boxes, trays, and furniture.
The 18th-century ramparts (skala) offer stunning views of the Atlantic and the fleet of blue fishing boats in the harbour below. Walk the full length of the sea wall at sunset for one of Morocco most atmospheric experiences.
The Blue Fishing Boats and Harbour
The harbour is the lifeblood of Essaouira. Early morning is the best time to visit, when the trawlers return and the day catch is landed directly onto the quay. Whole grilled fish (sardines, sea bream, sole) are sold by vendors right at the port — point to what you want and they grill it immediately. This is some of the freshest and cheapest seafood in the country.

Windsurfing and Kitesurfing
Essaouira is one of the top windsurfing destinations in the world. The Alizé trade wind blows reliably from spring through autumn, and the long sandy beach south of the medina — stretching for miles — provides ideal conditions. Dozens of schools and hire centres operate along the beach. Kitesurfers favour the conditions at Moulay Bouzerktoun, 20 km north. Even if you do not surf, watching the kiters from the beach is mesmerising.
Argan Oil
The region around Essaouira is the heartland of the argan tree — found nowhere else on Earth — and the women cooperatives here produce some of the finest culinary and cosmetic argan oil available. Visit a cooperative to see the traditional oil extraction process, taste the culinary oil on fresh bread, and buy direct from the producers at fair prices. Avoid shops in the medina selling "argan oil" at suspiciously low prices.
Getting There and Getting Around
Essaouira is 190 km from Marrakech via the A8 motorway and coastal road — a comfortable 3-hour drive through argan forest. There is no train service; buses exist but are slow. Driving is by far the best way to visit. Search available cars at OunizZ Cars and make Essaouira part of your Moroccan road trip.
