Why is Chefchaouen Blue?

The blue painting tradition has several claimed origins. Some say it was brought by Jewish refugees who fled the Spanish Inquisition in the 15th century and painted their homes blue as a symbol of sky and heaven. Others say the colour wards off mosquitoes. Whatever its origin, the tradition has been enthusiastically maintained and expanded — the city is re-painted regularly and the blue grows deeper and more elaborate with each decade.

What to See and Do

Plaza Uta el-Hammam

The main square is the heart of the medina, lined with cafes and overlooked by the 15th-century Grand Mosque and the restored Kasbah museum. Spend an hour or two here, drinking mint tea, watching the world pass, and planning your explorations of the surrounding streets.

Ras El Maa Waterfall

A ten-minute walk uphill from the medina brings you to a natural spring and small waterfall where local women wash clothes and children swim in summer. Follow the path further into the Rif hills for spectacular views back over the city.

Spanish Mosque

A 20-minute uphill walk from the medina, the Spanish Mosque (built during the Spanish protectorate) sits on a hilltop with the best panoramic views of Chefchaouen and the surrounding mountains. The ideal time to visit is at sunset, when the city turns gold below you.

Photography Tips

The best light for photography is early morning (7–9am) before crowds arrive, and the hour before sunset. The most photogenic streets are in the upper medina, above the Kasbah. Residents are generally tolerant of photography but always ask before photographing people. Some residents request small payment for posed photos.

Getting to Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is 200 km from Fes and 290 km from Tangier. There is no train station; the best way to arrive is by car or by bus from Fes or Tangier. Driving gives you the freedom to stop along the way — the Rif Mountain scenery is spectacular — and to do day trips to the surrounding hills.
