Marrakech to Sahara Desert: The Ultimate Road Trip Guide
The drive from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert is one of the great road journeys of the world. Over roughly 560 kilometres, you cross the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas, descend into a landscape of ochre kasbahs and palm oases, and arrive at last on the edge of an ocean of golden sand. Here is everything you need to plan this epic route.
Day 1: Marrakech to Ouarzazate
Leave Marrakech early to make the most of the day. The N9 road climbs steeply into the Atlas Mountains, reaching the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres — Morocco highest paved road. The views across the mountain ranges are breathtaking, especially in winter when the peaks are dusted with snow. Allow time for photos and a roadside mint tea.
After the pass, the road descends into the Draa Valley, with the dramatic Aït Benhaddou kasbah appearing on the left after about an hour. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has been used as a film location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Spend an hour exploring its crumbling towers and brick alleys before continuing to Ouarzazate for the night.

Day 2: Ouarzazate to Merzouga
From Ouarzazate, head east along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs. The N10 winds through the Draa and Dades valleys, passing fortified villages perched on rocky outcrops, rose-producing towns like Kelaat M'Gouna, and the stunning Todgha Gorge — sheer limestone cliffs rising 300 metres above a narrow river. Plan a short walk into the gorge before continuing east toward Erfoud and finally Merzouga, the gateway to Erg Chebbi.

Erg Chebbi is one of Morocco most spectacular natural sights: orange sand dunes rising up to 150 metres. Arrive in the late afternoon so you can take a camel ride out to a desert camp and watch the sun sink below the dunes.

Practical Driving Tips
- The N9 over the Atlas can be icy or closed in heavy winter snow — check conditions before you travel in December through February.
- Fill up with fuel at every opportunity — petrol stations become sparse east of Ouarzazate.
- A standard saloon car handles this route comfortably; a 4x4 is only needed if you plan to drive onto the dunes themselves.
- Download offline maps on Google Maps or Maps.me before you leave — mobile data is unreliable in mountain areas.

Extending the Route
From Merzouga you can continue north through Midelt and Ifrane to Fes, completing a grand loop of southern and central Morocco. Alternatively, retrace your route via the spectacular Atlas Mountains road trip for a different perspective of the landscape. Allow at least five days for the full Marrakech–Sahara–Fes loop.
